Parisian Design: Room Inspirations

Heading to Paris for our next stop while in France during our Global Design Series!

Many Parisian rooms feature lots of details, accessories and high glamour.
I have selected a few rooms that have the style but that are a bit paired down.
I like to design my clients homes to "LIVE" in, not just to "look pretty".
I think these rooms are a perfect example of just that concept.

Tell me your favorite room.

White Floral Arrangement Tutorial

Sometimes you need just a little "something" to finish off your decorating.
Most of the time you need a little softening. Florals and plants can do just that!
They will add color and texture to your design at the same time as adding life to your room.

Here is a simple tutorial to create your own designer look for pennies.

Choose your container first!
I chose this little white porcelain vase for this project.
For this size vase and project, you will need three long stemmed flowers with larger blooms.
I chose my flower that looks like a Camellia. I cut off the flowers (saving the smaller ones for a future project) and the leaves to separate out what I needed for this arrangement.

Next take a piece of oasis and trim it down slightly to fit into your container. Here I had to take off the corner edges to make it work for the round vase opening. Once you have the shape, you need to secure it. Break out the hot glue gun, add to the bottom of the oasis block and then place it in the bottom of the vase.

Here is what it looks like.

Now add your moss. No need to pin it down, your flowers will do that job.

Begin adding your flowers. Work in a triangle pattern for this design. Using only three large blooms.

Simple triangle pattern shown here.

Here is a side view of only the flowers.

Now start adding the leaves. Not too many but enough to fill in the gaps.

Another view of adding the leaves. I love the dark green against the white flowers.

Here is the finished project!

I hope I was able to inspire you with this tutorial and get your floral skills started. I think the hardest part is choosing the container and flowers. There are so many to find out in the marketplace now.

One quick DESIGNER TIP...make sure your flowers look real!

The fastest way to ruin your design is to use flowers that are plastic or not of true color (blue flowers, really?)
Micheal's Crafts, Joann's Crafts, Hobby Lobby and Pier 1 all have very realistic looking flowers. I know the cost can add up for these higher end flowers but look online for coupons or shop when they are on sell. Plus, you're saving money on doing the floral design yourself!

GOOD LUCK and I'd love to here your comments.
Or post your pictures on my FACEBOOK fan page!

Save money after Valentine's Day

If you are like me, you like to save money. But you also like to have some really cute stuff to add to your home and give as gifts. That is why I love stocking up after holidays. If you have the color red, pink, or purple in your home, now is the time to do just that! So many stores now have their Valentine's decor on sale.

I also love stocking up on gift wrap, gift bags and even gifts too. You just need to think about who you need to buy for in the future. Teachers, mothers, girl friends, and daughters might all be on that list with many items during this time.

Here are a few I found online to help you start grabbing some great bargains for others or yourself!

I found all of these items at Pier 1. Great gifts, pillows and a few red decorative elements for your home.

Mix them with other fall colors such as orange, greens and purples to a table that wows!

Red accessories to WOW your home!

Need to add a little WOW FACTOR to your home? Red will do just that.
Almost any color you currently have might just work with red. Make sure you choose the right tone...
red-orange or a red-blue to truly coordinate with items you already own.

Here are some FABULOUS accessories to give that pop of color you might just be lacking.

How about a cool and modern clock to add flair to your work space or kitchen?

Or add a fun RED PILLOW to jazz up your sofa or bed!

A FANTASTIC RED SCREEN will make a great addition to a room in the corner.
You can also use it to separate two areas in a large space.

Need a new end table with storage? Try this look for your own home.

Grouping like items will make a powerful statement in any room.
Plus using the color red...a winning combination!

Cute little mirrors like the one below can be added to any room.
Think of using picture frames as well to jazz up your space.

Lanterns are so popular right now. They can be used indoors or out.
And if you are afraid of real candles, try out the new battery operated candle options.
They come in many different shapes and colors!

A gorgeous red vase can stand alone as a beautiful art object
or group several together for added impact. Or use one single flower for a dramatic look!

If you want a real show stopper then check out the mirror below.
Imagine this in an entryway, over a dresser or how about in a half bath!
Great drama and flair in a single piece.

Need some big accessories for your home?
Disks on stands will give you the height you might just need.
And in a rich red color, well, it's a winner in my book!

One last WOW FACTOR....an Asian screen. You can mix this style with almost any other design style.
Think of mounting it on a wall behind a sofa, use it as a headboard in a bedroom,
or why not show it off in a hallway! This will add that "something extra" to the space that seems to not get decorated.

Now is a great time to STOCK UP on red accessories in many stores such as Pier 1TargetMarshall's, and Kirklands.  They all have their red items out to push during the Valentine's Day sales. And better yet, hit the sales after the holiday. You will find your best deals then. And if you really LOVE the color RED, Christmas shopping season is a great time to find even more accessories for your home.

Do you have a favorite accessory listed above? I'd love your input!!! Any that you would try and where would you use in your own home?

Thanks for your comments and HAPPY DECORATING!!!

Wall Arrangement Ideas

Artwork and family photos are what makes every house a home. It shows the personalities of those that live in the home. It creates a story about their lives. It showcases what their passions are and maybe places they have visited or dream of going one day. It truly is the most personal and sometimes daunting process in design.

Here are a few tips of creating the arrangement of you collections.
Remember, that not every person is not 6' tall. So the idea of hanging something at eye level...well, keep reading and I hope to explain more to help you figure out this task.

This is a collection of gold frames only. What a easy way to fill a wall space in formal areas. If you love to go to the flea markets or garage sales, this would be a project for you. Find interesting shapes and loads of detail. Then grab your spray paint. Here they painted all gold. But imagine some in all white, all black or if you are really brave choose bold colors such as orange, hot pink and purple and mix them up!

If you have a spot under the stairwell, use that as your guide. But remember, you do not need to always choose the "stair step" method. Here the home owner chose medallions backed by barn wood. A step fashion was used but by using larger pieces it makes a bold statement!

This is one of the most common areas people place family photos. This is where you can plan out a grid or pattern before hanging on the wall. when you have many frames to hang, it is best to use this method. lots of extra holes can be avoided and you will be so much happier with the outcome.

Notice in the example below, all the frames are black, all matting is white and all pictures are same color tone (black and white images). This really helps pull your collection together. So even if the frames are all different, by choosing the same color (silver, wood, or even red) it will look more cohesive.

A fun way to jazz up your walls is to mix it up!
Here they add mirrors, letters, and fabrics that are framed.

The image below works because all the frames are gold, the artwork has reds and blacks, and the letters are each of those colors. Color is what pulls it together even in mismatched pieces.

Similar example below but using black and golds to unify.

Another new and more modern way to treat your walls is by using picture ledges. So many are available at IKEA, TARGET and even discount department stores. This idea will allow you to switch out your artwork without all the work. This is great if you like to add seasonal photos, children's artwork or just to change your style every so often. This idea can be used in any room.

With so many family photos, spaces can be challenging to display them all. Look for small walls in the hallway, back wall near bathrooms, or even in the laundry room or half baths. You can truly use any space in your home. The example below shows a collection of pregnancy pictures, new born images and family photos too. By using the idea of same color frames, you can pull your collection together. No matter the photo content or color.

Here are two ways to help you create the arrangement.

If you already have the pictures framed, lay them out on the floor. Create different arrangements to see what you like best. Remember to account for furniture height and width or even light switches and lamps if hanging over a table. Measure the spacing between each picture and the width and height of arrangement. This is a tedious process but it will save you frustration in the hanging process.

You can also create templates made out of paper. Using painters tape, you will save your walls too. This will help you visualize it on the wall before getting the hammer out. Another great way and FABULOUS PRODUCT is buying a picture hanging template. This is one of the best inventions I have seen in a long time (at least in my line of work). Some come with frames that will make your entire process easier.

A few final tips, work in a grid mode. WHAT do I mean? Look back over the examples I have shown and imagine rectangles and squares around the groupings. It will help you line up your collection. Also, make some of your favorite color photos into black and whites. Again, by having all the same colored prints, you will create a more cohesive look. And don't forget to add something interesting to your arrangement. This is what designers do all the time to mix it up and keep it fresh!
